How to Prepare Your Home for a Power Outage
Of all the emergencies a household is likely to face, a power outage is by far the most common. Storms, high winds, equipment failures, grid overloads, accidents, and even planned maintenance can all bring the electricity down — sometimes for hours, occasionally for days. In most cases the disruption is a manageable inconvenience. But when an outage stretches beyond a few hours, particularly in winter or for households with medical equipment, young children, or elderly members, the consequences can escalate quickly.
The good news is that power outages are also one of the most straightforward emergencies to prepare for. With a few simple steps taken in advance, most households can ride out even a multi-day outage in reasonable comfort and safety. 1. Understanding What Stops Working
The first step in preparing for a power outage is understanding just how much of your home depends on electricity. It's more than most people realise.

In cold climates, warmth is a survival priority. If your only heat source is electrical, you need at least one backup option.

5. Food Safety During a Power Outage
Your refrigerator and freezer are on the clock the moment the power goes out.
