How to Store Tap Water for Long-Term Emergency Preparedness
Of all the services we take for granted, clean drinking water is often the first to disappear when things go wrong. Storms knock out pumping stations. Power outages disable treatment plants. Burst mains or contamination events can leave entire neighbourhoods without a usable supply for days or even weeks. And unlike food, there's no real substitute—your body needs water constantly, and even short periods without it become dangerous fast.
The good news is that ordinary tap water, when stored correctly, can remain perfectly safe to drink for many months. National civil-protection and public health agencies widely recommend that households keep a personal reserve on hand, and building one is straightforward. This guide walks through it step by step: how much to store, which containers to use, how to treat and maintain your supply, and the mistakes most people make along the way.
1. How Much Water Should a Household Store?
The amount of water a household needs in an emergency is often larger than people expect. It's easy to think of water as just something you drink, but in a disruption you'll also need it for cooking, brushing teeth, hand washing, and basic hygiene.
Emergency authorities across multiple countries converge on similar figures. For drinking and cooking, plan on around 3 litres per person per day. For basic hygiene, add another 2–3 litres. That brings the realistic daily minimum to roughly 5–6 litres per person.
Scaled up over time, that means storing about 15–18 litres per person for three days, 35–42 litres for a week, and 70–84 litres for a full two weeks. Guidance varies a little by country: some guidance sets the minimum at 20 litres per person to cover a week of drinking needs, while other guidance recommends about 4 litres per person per day, covering both drinking and sanitation.
If your household includes infants, elderly members, anyone with medical needs, or pets, increase those figures accordingly. Hot climates and physical activity can easily double your water requirements.
2. Choosing the Right Containers
The container you store water in matters just as much as the water itself. A poor choice can leach chemicals, develop leaks, or allow contamination over time.

For most households, food-grade plastic in the 10 to 25 litre range offers the best balance of durability, portability, and easy rotation. Avoid containers that previously held chemicals, cleaning products, or detergents—traces of these substances can persist even after washing. Thin, non-food-grade plastics (like standard milk jugs) are designed to biodegrade and tend to develop leaks in long-term storage. Open or poorly sealed containers invite contamination and should never be used.
3. Cleaning and Sanitising Containers Before Use
Even a brand-new container should be cleaned and sanitised before you fill it with water you plan to store for months. The process is simple and takes only a few minutes.
Start by washing the container thoroughly with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap, then rinse it well to remove all soap residue. Next, prepare a sanitising solution by mixing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach (containing 5–9% sodium hypochlorite) into one litre of water. Pour this solution into the container, close the lid, and shake or swirl it so the liquid contacts every interior surface. Let it stand for at least 30 seconds, then drain completely.
One important detail: do not rinse the container with untreated water after sanitising. This ensures you don't reintroduce contaminants right before filling.
4. Filling and Treating Tap Water for Storage
In most developed countries, municipal tap water is already disinfected and safe to store immediately. If your water comes from a treated public supply, you can generally fill your sanitised containers straight from the tap and seal them.
Let the tap run until the water is cold before filling, to make sure you're storing fresh water from the mains rather than water that's been sitting in warm household pipes.
For long-term storage beyond six months, adding a small amount of extra disinfectant provides an additional layer of safety. The standard recommendation is 2 drops of unscented household bleach per litre of water. Cap the container tightly and turn it gently a few times to mix. This is especially worth doing if you're uncertain about the chlorine level in your tap water or if your supply comes from a private well.
Always label each container with the date it was filled and any treatment you applied. When you need the water months later, that label will tell you whether it's still within its rotation window.
5. Ideal Storage Conditions
Where you keep your water is just as important as how you prepare it. Poor storage conditions can degrade containers, encourage bacterial growth, or contaminate your supply through chemical exposure.
The ideal spot is cool (below 20°C), dark, and dry. A basement, interior cupboard, or under-stairs closet works well. Keeping water away from direct sunlight and within a stable, cool temperature range discourages microbial activity.
There are a few things to avoid. Never store water near petrol, paint, solvents, or cleaning products—plastic containers can absorb fumes from nearby chemicals over time, tainting the water inside. Warm utility rooms or spots with direct sun exposure will accelerate the breakdown of plastic containers and may encourage algae growth. And if you live somewhere with freezing winters, keep in mind that water expands as it freezes—a full container in an unheated garage can crack and leak.
Under proper conditions, treated tap water stored in clean, sealed, food-grade containers can remain safe for 12 months or longer. Pure water in clean containers can technically be stored for years without becoming hazardous, though it may develop a flat or stale taste over time.
6. Rotation and Maintenance
Even well-stored water shouldn't be forgotten about. A simple rotation schedule keeps your supply reliable without waste.
The standard guideline is to replace untreated tap water every six months and treated water every twelve months. Between rotations, check your containers periodically for leaks, cloudiness, or any unusual odour. If something looks or smells off, dispose of the water and start fresh.
A "first in, first out" approach works well here: label your containers with fill dates, use the oldest ones first, and replace them at the back of the shelf. Some households find it helpful to tie their water rotation to an existing reminder—the start of daylight saving, for example, or the same weekend they check their smoke alarms.

Water that has gone a bit flat from long storage can be freshened up by pouring it back and forth between two clean containers a few times—this reintroduces air and improves the taste noticeably.
If water appears cloudy, smells unusual, or has been stored well past its rotation date, you can restore its safety in two ways. Boiling is the most effective: bring the water to a full rolling boil for one minute (or three minutes if you're above 2,000 metres in altitude), then let it cool naturally. Alternatively, you can re-treat with household bleach following the same dosage used during initial filling. Boiling will not remove chemical contaminants, but it is highly effective against bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

A few pitfalls trip up even well-intentioned households. Relying solely on shop-bought bottled water without a rotation plan is one—commercial bottles have expiration dates and can develop off-tastes from plastic degradation over time. Reusing containers that once held chemicals is another, since residues can persist even after thorough washing.
Many people also forget to label and date their containers, which makes rotation almost impossible. And perhaps the most common mistake of all is assuming tap water will always be available.
